On Parole

Free at LastTHEY SAY time off for good behavior is seldom granted in the stem-cell transplant penal system.  And yet, there I was yesterday afternoon with my bag packed, climbing into the car with Val at the wheel to make a quick getaway.

It was 15th day of my hospitalization and the absolute shortest time frame anyone said was possible. I win!

That’s not to say the entire sentence is fulfilled. My medical parole officers insist that I check in daily for blood draws, catheter care, and various infusions over the coming weeks.

Still, it was pretty sweet sleeping in our own bed last night, even if I awakened every two hours or so without reason. It was as if I was anticipating those wee-hours nurses’ visits for medications and “vitals.”

Much of what happens next depends on the numbers. Blood tests taken this morning indicated no present need for supplements or blood products, but tomorrow I might need platelets or magnesium. I asked one of the  nurses what foods are high in magnesium and she replied, “Well, potatoes…”

“Does that include French fries?” I quickly followed, with a sudden realization that along with my mental energy, my appetite was also returning. She affirmed, and Val and I found ourselves enjoying a delicious all-American burger and fries lunch on the way home. Best thing I’ve tasted in close to a month.

  1. Congratulations ! :o))
You are home, and that is wonderful to hear. We are so very glad that you seem to have passed the worst moments with no “other” problems. So we wish you all the best now, and for a complete remission in the months to come. My brother was given a “complete remission” status on Oct. 3rd after nine months of Revlimid……….. So, good news there too.
As always, take good care, and don’t take unnecessary risks because as you know….. the “sentence” is not over yet.

  2. Home sweet home, enjoy. Glad your doing as well as can be anticipated.
Enjoy football at home. Did the nurse say potato chips qualified too?

  3. Great news to hear you’re back home, in spite of your follow-up treatments.
We’re hoping your recovery continues. Good luck and enjoy your return of appetite!!
    Love, Sy & Simmy
